A match who texts a lot, then cancels twice. You wonder whether they're busy or avoiding.
This guide gives you signs you can check over weeks of dating, not gut feelings you try to read on date one.
The short answer
Emotional availability shows in consistent effort, clear intentions, and boundaries held with some flexibility. You'll see most of it over weeks of small moments: they follow through on plans, say what they want, ask about your life and listen to the answer, share some of their own story, and can handle a disagreement without shutting down. Rarely can you tell on a first date.
Signs a match is emotionally available
In the messages
- They make plans, not vague suggestions.
- They follow through or reschedule with a specific new time.
- They say what they're looking for: a relationship, companionship, or time to explore.
- Their texts match their energy on the date.
By the third date
- They share something real about their life, not just small talk.
- They ask questions and remember your answers.
- They set a boundary kindly when they need to: "I can't do Friday, but Saturday works."
- They can say "I don't know yet" instead of pretending certainty.
Over the first two months
- They show up under stress instead of disappearing.
- They handle a disagreement without blaming or shutting down.
- They make plans past next weekend.
- They talk about introducing you to their friends or mention you meeting their kids at some point if they're a parent.
Reddit posters in a thread on what emotional availability looks like describe these signs, checked October 2026. Gottman lists emotional availability as one of the 12 clear signs you are ready to date again, checked October 2026.
Signs a match may be emotionally unavailable
- Hot and cold texting. They text constantly one day, then go quiet for three without explanation.
- Vague about what they want. You ask where they see this going and they dodge: "I'm just seeing what happens."
- Rushing to exclusivity right after a split. They ended a relationship weeks ago and want commitment now. See the Reddit thread on signs someone is not ready to date yet after separating, checked October 2026.
- Every story about the ex. Most of what they say relates to their last relationship and it all sounds raw.
- Every conversation stays surface-level. Weeks in and you still don't know much about their life, their family, or what matters to them.
- They cancel plans without rescheduling. Once is fine. A pattern means they're not interested or they're keeping you as an option.
- They talk about trust issues but won't say what they need. Declaring that they have walls up is not the same as working to lower them.
- They avoid conflict. The first disagreement and they shut down or ghost.
These signs show up over weeks, not on date one. One or two don't define someone. A pattern does.
Checking yourself
Check whether these describe you right now. If several do, you may not be ready to date.
- You avoid saying what you want because naming it feels risky.
- You keep conversations surface-level to protect yourself.
- You cancel plans when anxiety spikes.
- You date to avoid feeling lonely, not to meet someone specific.
- You compare every match to your ex.
- A match shows interest and you pull back or lose interest.

Asking about it without an interrogation
You can ask plain questions by date two or three without turning the date into an interview.
- "What are you hoping to find on here?"
- "How long ago did your last relationship end?"
- "What does a good relationship look like to you?"
Their answers matter less than how they answer. Someone emotionally available can talk about what they want without deflecting or getting defensive.
The Transfer Portal dating app offers intention matching: members state whether they want a partner, companionship, or time to explore. Readiness matching shows you people at a similar stage. Both features put availability information up front.
If you're a parent or recently divorced
Emotional availability with a custody schedule looks like planning, not constant access. An emotionally available single parent makes time for you within the limits of their schedule and tells you when they have the kids. They don't cancel every plan at the last minute, but they also can't drop everything for a spontaneous date.
